Operation and Use of the Coordinate Measuring Machine

The CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) is a high-precision instrument used to measure mechanical components by comparing actual geometries with theoretical design values.

It detects the X, Y, Z coordinates of points on the part surface, using either a contact probe or an optical sensor.

CMM Operating Principle

Mechanical Structure

The machine moves along three orthogonal axes, equipped with linear encoders that ensure precise and repeatable readings.

Probing or Scanning

The probe acquires single points by touching the surfaces, or performs continuous scanning to obtain a dense and detailed survey.

Coordinate Detection

Each detected point is recorded with micrometric precision.

Software Processing

The collected data are compared with the CAD model to evaluate dimensions, shapes and geometric tolerances.

Use in Metrology Room – Application to Distitec Bearings

In a controlled metrological environment, the CMM is particularly suitable for bearing inspection, where very tight geometric tolerances are required.

Main applications include:

Measurement of inner and outer diameters with ovality verification.

Checking concentricity and coaxiality between different diameters.

Verifying of roundness, cylindricity and flatness, ensuring correct surface geometry.

Raceway surveying, to ensure compatibility with rolling elements.

Operational Advantages

  • High precision and stability thanks to the temperature-controlled environment.
  • Automation of measurement cycles through CNC programs to ensure repeatability across production batches.
  • Reduction of human error and ability to produce traceable reports for quality control and product certification.
