Rolling bearings used in mining sector machinery operate under especially severe conditions, characterized by high and often combined loads, shocks and vibrations, possible misalignments, contamination from dust and moisture and, in some applications, operating temperatures higher than those used in conventional applications. These conditions require bearings capable of guaranteeing adequate load capacity and resistance to the effects of the operating environment.


When Bearing Reliability is Critical

In applications characterized by high loads and dynamic stresses, a bearing must present a series of fundamental characteristics, including:

  • high radial and axial load capacity, to withstand intense and often combined stresses;
  • resistance to shocks and vibrations, achieved through constructive and geometric solutions capable of reducing and distributing load peaks on the raceways;
  • use of special bearing steels, selected according to the application and subjected to heat treatments suitable to guarantee hardness, dimensional stability and fatigue resistance;
  • protection against contamination and dust through reinforced seals, multiple sealing systems and lubricants suitable for heavily contaminated environments.

Mining Sector Applications and Machinery

Mining applications include numerous machines and plants that operate under severe conditions, including crushers, mills, screens and conveyor belts, as well as gearboxes and transmission systems.

In material handling applications, such as excavators, bearings work with slow but continuous movements and high loads.


Types of Bearings

Depending on the type of machine and operating conditions, different types of bearings are used, selected according to the load and permitted misalignment.

Spherical roller bearings: thanks to their high load capacity and good tolerance to misalignments, they are among the most used in crushers, screens and machinery subject to shocks and vibrations.

Tapered roller bearings: when combined radial and axial loads are present, they are used in crushers and gearboxes.

Cylindrical roller bearings: for applications with high radial loads and requirement of good shaft rigidity, they are used in transmissions and gearboxes.

Slewing bearings: in material handling machines, such as excavators, they are used to support high loads and tilting moments with slow movements.
