Why Hardness is Crucial for Bearing Durability

The hardness tester is the instrument used to measure the hardness of a material, that is, its ability to resist penetration or permanent deformation.


The principle is simple: a specifically shaped indenter exerts controlled pressure on the component surface; the depth of penetration determines the hardness value, generally expressed in HRC or HRB scales.


The measurement is not just a numerical value: it represents a fundamental indicator of the material's ability to withstand loads and stresses over the long term.


Why Hardness is Essential in Rolling Bearings

In a bearing, raceways and rolling elements are subjected to high pressures, repeated contacts and thousands of rolling cycles. Correct hardness is what allows the bearing to maintain its efficiency over time.

 - Insufficient hardness

results in accelerated wear, deformations and loss of performance.

- Eccessive hardness

can cause surface cracks, chipping or ring fractures due to material brittleness.
