The Altimeter

What is the altimeter

The altimeter is a precision measuring instrument used to accurately determine the height
of mechanical components, surfaces to a flat reference base, and both internal and
external diameters.

It is mainly used in the metrological field for the dimensional inspection of machined parts, particularly for checking heights, depths, dimensions, and level differences.

how the altimeter works

It generally consists of a stable base, a vertical graduated or digital column, and a movable carriage equipped with a probe or stylus.

The altimeter can be analog (with vernier and micrometer) or digital, providing direct readings and often advanced functions such as differential measurement and data storage.

It is commonly used on cast iron or granite surface plates to ensure measurement accuracy.

What the altimeter measures

With the altimeter it is possible to perform different types of measurements, including:

  • absolute height measurement of a point or surface from the reference plane;
  • differential measurement between two dimensions, useful for dimensional comparison;
  • checking flatness or parallelism between surfaces;
  • depth control through dedicated accessories;
  • dimensional inspection of diameters (internal and external).

Altimeters can ensure high levels of precision, with resolutions ranging from 0.01 mm up to
0.001 mm
in high-accuracy digital models, making them essential tools for quality control
in mechanical and industrial applications.

Distitec bearings: the altimeter supporting our precision

The altimeter is widely used in the manufacturing and testing of bearings, where it is necessary to verify with extreme accuracy the heights and diameters of the raceways, reference edges, and the flatness of machined surfaces. This ensures compliance with dimensional tolerances and the correct performance of the bearing in its final application.
