Rolling mills: how they work

Tapered roller thrust bearings for rolling mills are used to support and facilitate the movement of rollers and rotating parts during the process of rolling materials. They are installed inside the rollers of the rolling mill to ensure smooth and frictionless rotation, allowing the material to be rolled evenly and precisely. Bearings are essential to ensure the efficiency and precision of the rolling mill. In the operation of an entire rolling mill, even more important than tapered roller axial bearings are multirow cylindrical roller bearings, which act as the main support for the flattening rollers. In fact, each customer can request the creation of the version most suited to their applications.

The rolling mill is an industrial machine inserted in the production lines of various metals and alloys:

  • steel
  • copper and its alloys (bronze and brass)
  • aluminum and its alloys
  • gold
  • platinum
  • all malleable metals

This type of industrial machinery is used to produce "long rolled products", for example:

normal and stainless steel sheets and strips sheets and strips of aluminum and its alloys

It is composed of a series of rollers opposed two by two, in a vertical direction which rotate and deform the material several times until the desired shape and size is obtained. There are different types of rolling mills that can work metals and alloys both hot and cold.

The rolling bearings for the rolling cylinders, act as lateral supports of the cylinders and their life depends on the type of use of the rolling mill. The latter are found in all full cycle steel mills, (blast furnace + converter + rolling mill) or partial cycle (rolling mill + cutting lines).
